Electronic Gadgets

A few of the electronic gadgets that are topping the charts so far in 2019, from smart TVs to smartwatches

LG Signature Rollable OLED TV R9
Considered one of the most futuristic technologies to date, LG showed off its new disappearing OLED TV at CES 2019, with a screen that can stretch to 65 inches and then roll into a compact box! This 65-inch form is called the Full View, or you can display just a small part of the screen in Line View. Then there’s Zero View—the screen disappears, leaving behind a veritable piece of art. In Line View there are six different modes—Music, Clock, Frame, Mood, Lighting and the Home dashboard—so you can take a quick glance at the time or weather, stream your favourite music, adjust the lighting or set the mood with visual effects (Rain, Stars, Snow) to match your audio. You can also access Amazon Prime Video, Alexa and Google Assistant with the touch of a remote button. Oh yes, the actual TV is awesome too: 4K HDR cinema-quality viewing.

Samsung Frame TV
Not to be outdone, Samsung is challenging the LG rollable TV with its own Frame range. The innovative electronics company has partnered with galleries and collections across the globe to design a catalogue of artwork screensavers, which appear on the TV screen when it’s in standby mode. No more empty black screen upon your wall! For 2019, the 43-, 55- and 65-inch sizes are joined by the new 49-inch. As an added bonus, you can choose from five different bezel finishes (white, black, grey, or light- and dark brown wood) to enhance the TV’s frame theme. And the screen itself has rich, vibrant colours and contrast levels, thanks to the 4K QLED panel, so you can enjoy a dazzling HDR viewing experience.

Samsung Galaxy Fold
From rollables to foldables… The stunning 7.3-inch Dynamic AMOLED display made of a revolutionary polymer material is the largest Galaxy smartphone screen yet—but what’s even more exciting is the fact that the device can fold and unfold like a book. A 20-part, dual-axis hinge locks it into place, preventing you from overextending the display past 180 degrees. Fold it back up and the phone snaps shut—it won’t accidentally unfurl itself in your bag. And the hinge has been designed to withstand more than 200 000 folds and unfolds, which works out at 100 opens and shuts a day for five years. The phone is as impressive on the inside, with an advanced processor, 12GB of RAM and 512GB internal storage. What’s more, you can mix and match the hinge and cover colours to truly stand out in the crowd.

Withings Move Timeless Chic
For those who’d like an advanced activity-tracking smartwatch but without the bulky unattractiveness that’s common in the products of today, take a look at the Withings Move Timeless Chic. There’s no digital screen, but your activity is shown directly on the classic analogue dial with its third hand. Don’t be fooled by the watch’s simplicity: It seamlessly tracks and records your activities such as walking, running, swimming, cycling and even sleeping—syncing with the free Health Mate app so you can view your trends and improve over time. Long-pressing the side button will launch a workout session and activate a chronograph and connected GPS so you get duration, distance, elevation, and your path mapped in the app. Most impressively, however, is the battery life of 18 months.

KitchenAid Cook Processor Connect
Automation in the kitchen! Let the machine take over and stir your onions as they sauté so that they don’t burn; chop veggies to your preferred size; knead dough for bread, pizza and pasta; whip your egg whites or cream; steam your fish; measure ingredients right in the pot… all at the touch of a button. C’est magnifique! And like the other new KitchenAid products, the Yummly app can download 100 preset recipes straight to the Cook Processor Connect, with step-by-step instructions for you to produce some great meals for family and friends.

Huawei MateBook X Pro
The 2019 edition of Huawei’s superb laptop is more powerful than its predecessor, but just as thin, light, portable and versatile: The aluminium unibody design is 4.9mm at its thinnest end and 14.6mm at its thickest, weighing just 1.33kg. And with its 13.9-inch, 3 000 x 2 000-pixel resolution touchscreen, fingerprint reader within the power button for quick biometric login via Windows Hello, and easy opening without awkward clamshell fumbles, the MateBook X Pro could just become your new favourite laptop.

Kindle Oasis 2019
The all-new e-reader has everything Kindle customers have come to love in the previous generation: a large 7-inch display, waterproofing, the Paperwhite display and Audible—but now it’s just a little better. Additions include an adjustable light so you can read with a warmer tone that can easily transition from daytime to night-time reading; a six-week battery life; more options for larger formatting; the option to read white text on black; and buttons ready for a simple flex of your thumb to turn the page.
